26 Poems on Physical Love and Sex

It’s a common perception that poetry has expanded its horizon in terms of form, technique and theme in the modern, rather contemporary world, with the poets discussing every aspect of life, every topic under the sun and all kinds of human relations, including physical love or sex. However, poetry as the most rebellious form of literature never remained within bounds, especially regarding selection of its themes and the poets always followed throes of passion, pouring emotions into their poems.

Here are the amatory poems going thousands of years back in the history of poetry that take on the theme of physical love, sex and sexuality. The oldest ones are from Gathasaptasati or Gaha Sattasai, a poetry collection written from 200BC to 200AD in Prakrit language of ancient India. There are ancient Chinese as well as ancient Arabic poems. All of them are written by famous poets and include some of them who use metaphors as well, like Plath, Auden and H.Y.’s poems that don’t take the subject as directly as others. her jeweled hairpin is a colored phoenix,
and her silk shawl covers a red rainbow.
She says she’s from Yao Hua Garden
and is on pilgrimage to the Jade Emperor’s palace.

she happened to come here, east of Song family.
When I flirt with her she resists at first.
but soft feelings already secretly connect us.
When she bows her hair it seems the shadows of cicadas move.
As she walks about her jade stocking are gilded with dust.

and like Mandarin ducks dance with our necks twined.

His Urdu poetry collection “Koel Shehr Ki Katha” (The Tale of a Cuckoo City) is more of a treatise on his experience of exile and pangs of separation that he felt for his native land.

Like Kashmiri poet Agha Shahid Ali who saw Calcutta in Ohio as described in his poem “When on Route 80 in Ohio,” Hasan Mujtaba also has similar feelings as he writes in his poem “Alan Ginsberg Kay Naam” when Avenue Fifth takes him to the streets of Sehwan Sharif and River Hudson appears the River Indus.

It ripped me off every day and pieced me together in my dreams every night. That is why most of the poetry I wrote here revolves around exile. I think any poet and writer who has to say something which puts him into real hot waters must have a country of exile.”

Hasan, who spent most of his life in Sindh and working as a journalist in Karachi when he left, says at another place, “I have made my own kind of Sindh in America: Sindh in exile.

“I return every second or third night in my dreams in my sleep. I have made America my home but Sindh exists somewhere else. I want to return one day like Gabriel Garcia Marquez returns in his ‘Clandestine in Chile’. Or, only after my death, in the form of my ashes to be scattered onto Sindhu, the river Indus.”

In a poem on his friend Zafaryab Ahmed, Hasan Mujtaba defines exile considering it more of a torture than relief which renders one dreamless. He calls it a word of abuse, the poet’s beloved, stepsister of suicide, national anthem and old newspaper clipping.

His poems “Ik Koel Shehr Ki Katha” and “Ba Naam-i-Darya” has themes of his native country. While the first poem shows how the socio-political conditions in his homeland have gone from bad to worse, the second one presents the River Indus, the erstwhile life source which has turned poisonous.

In the whole collection, there are references to Hyderabad, Sindh, Jamshoro, Attock, Jhelum, Sehwan, Bhambore, Jhang, Jhelum, Sheikh Ayaz, Bhatai, Waris Shah, Amrita Pritam, Sultan Bahu and many other poets of the land of Pakistan which manifest the connection that Hasan felt with the land of its people.

Hasan has taken on the themes of terrorism, army as well as dictatorship in his poem on Ahmed Faraz, “Tareekh Ki Khooni Gali,” Khuda Kay Naam Par”, “Tum Kitnay Bhutto Maro Gay,” “December 16”, and “Ziaul Haq 99”. In the last poem he also takes on writers and journalists as he says, “Maliha Lodhi, Azhar Lodhi, Najam Sethi Aur Akbar S Ahmed / Teri Sarkar Mein Pahunchay to Sabhi Aik Huay” while referring to fatal nexus of journalists and dictatorship. Of the abovementioned poems, two of them are obituaries on Ahmed Faraz and Benazir Bhutto. There is a poem on missing persons also as many of the nationalists went missing in Balochistan and Sindh during the last one decade.

One of the best poems in the book is the sole Punjabi poem that Hasan Mujtaba wrote on the sale of the Amrita Pritam and Imroz’ house “K-25, Hauz Khas” in New Delhi for building a plaza there. The poem titled, “A Poem on the Sale of Amrita Pritam’s House” is a dirge on the unhindered commercialisation and capitalism which has devoured everything that’s worth saving.

What can be shocking for Urdu poetry readers is the use of cuss words that many poems carry like in the poem dedicated to his fried Zafaryab and in other poems like “Janay Walay Dost Kay Naam” and “December 16”. There is hypertextuality where Hasan refers to other poets and their lines.

The collection is a treat for the poetry readers as the poems are not diluted by the traditional techniques and themes that we find in most of the contemporary Urdu poets and many of them are like confessional poetry of Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton and Robert Lowell. One such poem is “Yousif Naam Ka Larka” which also hints on the sexual proclivities of the poet.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_empty_space height=”300px”][vc_column_text css_animation=”right-to-left”]

Eid in the Paradise of Blood

[On 27th Ramzan (7th August, 2013), one Colonel belonging from Peshawar, one from Lahore and another SSP from Swat, were killed in gruesome targeted firing by a militant upon their return from a security meeting late at night. This poem is inspired by the widow of the brave soldier who got martyred in this firing.  Her shrieks still can’t escape my ears.]

In the valleys of green, terrestrial wonders of this paradise
where life was meant to be cherished,
filled with every pearl of joy
where sorrow was supposed to be untouched.

But a brute mortality brought an end to it all.

By dangerous demons known to the world,
protected for the value they bring
to their Guardian Monsters.

There in a house in this red paradise,
haunted by the shrieks of a  mother of three.

She said she had her man,
a handsome man,
who built  heaven for her.
She looked up to him, as he embraced her with guarantee

–In his uniform like a photograph decorated on her mantelpiece-

Said that he will return to her,
as he kissed his little ones good-bye
in their sleep, in the warmth of all his love.

Eid is coming, he thought, I will bring them gifts.

But knowing not what future might hold,
in this shaky world he dreamed to turn into paradise.

The glow in his brave spirit, said the wailing mother of three
was left behind in permanence as he departed.

A particle of his soul as a building block
of heaven he wanted for his motherland.

He never returned as his devotion called for
sacrifice to barbarity of the demons she knew nothing about,
Except that they killed the man she loved
Who never made it home to her children
this Eid with his promised gifts.

لاشیں سب اٹھوا لی گئی ہیں
جتنے زخمی تھے اُن کو امداد فراہم کردی گئی ہے
جسموں کے بکھرے اعضا اب وہاں نہیں ہیں، جہاں پڑے تھے
سب کچھ ویسا ہے جیسا اُس بم کے پھٹنے سے پہلے تھے
البتہ مرنے والے کے جھلسے ہوئے ارمانوں کا اک ڈھیر ابھی تک وہیں پڑا ہے
ٹوٹے ہوئے اور مسخ شدہ خوابوں کا بھی انبار لگا ہے
ارمانوں اور خوابوں کا کیا کرسکتے ہیں ہم
ان کو دفنانے کے بارے میں بھی کوئی حکم نہیں ہے
جن کے تھے یہ، اُن کے سِوا کسی اور کے کام نہیں آسکتے
ان کی کوئی قیمت ہوتی تو انھیں کباڑی ہی لے جاتا
بالکل ہی بے مصرف ہیں، بے قیمت ہیں یہ
آوٗ کہ ہم سب مل کر اِن کو دور کہیں پھینک آئیں جا کر
اس سے قبل کہ گلے سڑے ارمانوں اور خوابوں سے اٹھنے والا تعفن
ساری فضا آلودہ کردے
آخر ہم اس شہر کو صاف رکھیں گے تو آئندہ نسلیں

ان ارمانوں اور خوابوں کے کتنے مضر اثرات ہیں ممکن
تاکہ ہمارے بچے ان سے دُور رہیں اور چین سے اپنی عمر گزاریں
ویسے تم نے غور کیا ہے؟
ارمانوں اور خوابوں کی لعنت میں ہم سب کی محنت سے
کتنے قلیل عرصے میں کتنی کمی ہوئی ہے؟
اب تو یوں لگتا ہے جیسے
پولیو اور تپِ دق سے بھی پہلے شاید
ارمانوں اور خوابوں کی مہلک بیماری مٹ جائے گی
خیر۔ ۔ ۔ ابھی تو ہاتھ بڑھاوٗ
ارمانوں اور خوابوں کا یہ ڈھیر ہٹاوٗ

تو موسی نے رو رو کے گدڑی بھگو لی تھی

یہ ہے وہ امت ؟؟

کہ جس کے لئے ناز و نعمت کا سلوی اتارا گیا تھا

!یہی لوگ ہیں ناں

کہ جن کے بزرگوں کو ٹھنڈی ہواؤں میں رکھا گیا تھا

جو کھاتے تھے پیتے تھے رحمت لٹاتے تھے

اور پھر یہ کہتے تھے

“موسیٰ ! لڑے جا کے تو اور تیرا خدا، ہم تو آرام سے ہیں “

یہی ہیں وہ نسلیں ؟؟

کہ جن کو بچانے کی خاطر

پھر بھی اتنا کہوں گا

اگر اس گھڑی وہ بزرگی بھرا نیل مٹی نہ ہوتا

تو آج اس گھڑی تیرے سوہنے محمّد کی امت کے بچے نہ مرتے۔۔۔!!۔

وادھو پیٹ

جمن توں لے کے مرن تک
عورت صرف اک پیٹ ہوندی اے
اوہدا کوئی دل دماغ نہیں ہوندا
ماں پے آکھن
جو کوئی ایہنوں پال سکے
اوہ لے جاوے
جو کوئی ایہنوں کج کے رکھے
لے جاوے
تے سوہرے لبھن ایسا پیٹ
جیہڑا اپنی روٹی آپ کماوے
اوہناں دیاں نسلاں اگے ودھاوے
تے جے فیر کوئی کملی نمانی
ایہہ دسن دا آہر کرے
کہ اوہدا دل دماغ وی اے
تے کہندے
پیو دی لج نہیں رہ گئی
سوہریاں دے سر پگ نہیں رہ گئی
فیر ایسے پیٹ دے جمے بال
بڈھے وارے ہس کے پُچھن
توں تاں بس اک وادھو پیٹ ہیں
ماں تیرے تاں پیر ہی کوئی نہیں
جنت کتھے رکھی رب نے؟؟؟

قربانی

پیاس کی شدت سے
جب آنکھ کھلی
تو گھر میں پانی نہ تھا
بس ایک گلاس کی تہہ میں
دو گھونٹ پانی
میں نے تڑپ کر
گلاس اٹھا لیا
لیکن پھر خیال آیا
وہ جب باہر سے آئے گا
وہ بھی تو پیاسا ہو گا
اسکے حلق میں بھی
کانٹے پڑ رہے ہونگے
اس کی زبان بھی سوکھی ہو گی
اس کے ہونٹ بھی
خشک پتوں جیسے ہوئے ہونگے
اور پیاس کی شدت سے
وہ کانپ رہا ہو گا
پھر میں یہ انمول خزانہ۔۔۔
یہ دو گھونٹ پانی
اسے پیش کروں گی
اور بتاؤں گی
کہ میں نے کتنی عظیم قربانی دی ہے
اپنی پیاس کا نقشہ کھینچوں گی
اور وہ گیلی آنکھوں کے ساتھ
میرا ماتھا چوم لے گا
تب میری انا
جسے لوگ محبت کہتے ہیں
خوشی سے ناچے گی
اتنے میں وہ آ پہنچا
میرا محبوب۔۔۔۔
میری انا کی تسکین۔۔۔
لیکن وہ تو پیاسا نہ تھا
اور اس کے تروتازہ چہرے کو دیکھ کر
مجھے اس پر شدید غصہ آیا
